Wovoka Trudell is gallery co-owner, manager, and resident artist. He is a California native and longtime Las Vegas resident, having graduated from Las Vegas’ Robertson High School and New Mexico Highlands University. For as long as he can remember, he has had some sort of drawing tool in his hand. As he got older, he experimented with painting, sculpture, and photography, but his passion has always been drawing. He uses it as an outlet, a way to escape. At the same time, he uses it as a way to connect. He loves the simplicity of drawing. “All I ever needed was something to draw with and on. That’s still all I need.” He credits artists such as LeRoy Neiman and Frank Frazetta among his influences. He also credits his parents for their creative influence: his mother, Fenicia Ordoñez, is a talented artist and NMHU alumni, and his father is the late Native Indigenous activist, actor, and poet, John Trudell.
Wovoka is an accomplished artist, having been published multiple times, who has been keeping busy with putting together his own upcoming show for onesixsix, as well as organizing future shows for other local artists. His goal is to give local artists and art the exposure and publicity it rightfully deserves.
“I draw all the time. Drawing is my backbone. I don’t think a painter has to be able to draw, I just think that if you draw, you better draw well.” – LeRoy Neiman
